3D – ASPCA Visual Re-Design

2023, Adobe Illustrator, Figma

Role – Researcher, Visual Designer for proposed ASPCA mobile app.

Introduction The ASPCA Visual Re-design project centers around designing a pet-friendly, pet-centered app for ASPCA, a leading organization for the rescue and protection of home-bound pets.

My project aims to foster a positive relationship between animals for adoption (dogs and cats) and human adopters, from the pre-adoption phase to the post adoption animal training phase. I take into consideration the traits of human adopters, the living situations that they are in, as well as individual stories and special need status of the pets.

The visual design of the app focuses on the warm colors of yellows, oranges, and reds, creating a coherent visual narrative for animals and their perspective owners

The ASPCA Visual Re-design project was awarded with Gold in Illustration for Graphic Design for the 2024 Indigo Awards and Graphic Design USA Competition Winner 2024

The Thinking Process

To create my project, I conducted an interview with an ASPCA volunteer.

According to the volunteer, people love emotional impactful animal stories that can

help them build up connections with the cats and dogs in foster. The ASPCA also

features ‘animal of the week’ to showcase their latest animal to find a foster home. For the animal of the week, the ASPCA features photos, videos, and a short introduction of

the animal.

I find that the ASPCA website looks formal and unadorned in its aesthetic, but the pet descriptions lean towards pet-centric, in which pets are portrayed as the major character, and matchmakers are there to help humans build a relationship with them. In my app, I implemented visuals to provide direct and nonverbal information about animals for adoption and pulls the users in through their colorful and emotional appeals.
