The Museum of Kitsch Arts

2021, Blender

The Museum of Kitsch Arts is a project that uses 3D design to imitate an ‘Instagram-able’ avant-garde art exhibition. The artworks displayed in this space represent various forms of ‘kitsch arts’, which are mass-produced art influenced by contemporary internet aesthetics or cultural motifs.

You can see four types of art in this small museum space: a set of highly saturated Christian and religion-inspired artworks; an installation that exemplifies Vaporwave aesthetics and retro computer imagery; a pink pool with bright flamingo and donut floats; a set of home decors with internet-generated motivational messages. Each set of artwork has an artist statement that was written in a humorous way to explain what it is about, and what life events it can remind its viewer of due to the viewer’s potential exposure to artworks with similar aesthetics.

Through The Museum of Kitsch Arts, I would like the viewers to think about how the development of technology and digital landscape had changed the way people create and perceive art. As the internet becomes a secondary home for people to express themselves, many started creating art that follow online art trends.

Can popular art influencers who generate internet aesthetic arts be considered ‘artists’? Can mass-produced arts become pieces that can be exhibited in traditionally ‘high-end’ exhibitions? These are some questions we can think about as we explore the intersection of art, technology, and society.
